A reed diffuser is an easy way to add fragrance without a flame, but the liquid still needs careful handling. This guide explains how to set up, use and store a reed diffuser more safely. Always follow the instructions and warnings supplied with your specific product.
Choose a safe position
Place the diffuser upright on a stable, level surface where it cannot be knocked or pulled down. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Choose a spot away from food, open flames, heat sources and direct sunlight, which can increase evaporation or affect the fragrance.
Diffuser liquid can mark, stain or damage painted, polished, plastic, leather, fabric and other delicate surfaces. Always use a suitable protective coaster or tray underneath the bottle and keep it away from the edge of furniture.
Set up the diffuser carefully
Remove the stopper or cap gently and avoid splashing the liquid. Insert only the reeds supplied or recommended for the product. Do not use the liquid on your skin and do not swallow it. Wash your hands after handling the bottle or used reeds, and keep the packaging and product label for future reference.
More reeds can create a stronger fragrance but may also make the liquid evaporate faster. Start with the number suggested by the manufacturer and adjust only if the product instructions allow it.
Turning the reeds
Some diffusers recommend turning the reeds occasionally; others do not. Follow the product directions. If you turn them, protect the surface first, wear suitable gloves if advised on the label and handle the reeds over the bottle or a disposable covering. Wipe the outside of the bottle before returning it to its protective tray.
Never place wet reeds directly on furniture or fabric. Dispose of used paper or coverings safely, and wash your hands afterwards.
If liquid spills
Keep people and pets away from the spill. Ventilate the area and follow the clean-up guidance on the product label. Blot rather than spread the liquid, using materials suitable for the affected surface. Do not mix cleaning products. If the liquid touches skin or eyes, follow the label guidance and seek appropriate advice if needed.
Everyday care
- Keep the bottle upright and do not overfill it.
- Do not light the reeds or place the diffuser near a flame.
- Check the bottle and protective surface regularly for drips.
- Keep the original label readable.
- Do not pour leftover liquid into another unlabelled container.
- Keep different diffuser liquids separate unless the manufacturer says they can be mixed.
Storage and disposal
If the diffuser will not be used for a while, follow the product instructions for closing and storing it. Keep it upright in a cool, secure place in its original labelled container. Do not pour leftover fragrance into sinks, drains or outdoors. Follow the disposal directions on the label and any local guidance.
Quick safety check
- Is the diffuser upright on a stable protective tray?
- Is it away from children, pets, heat and flames?
- Are nearby surfaces protected from splashes?
- Have you kept the product instructions?
