Candle Care & Safety Guide

Candle Care & Safety Guide

Candles can make a room feel calm and welcoming, but every open flame needs care. This guide covers simple habits that help you use and enjoy candles more safely. Always read and follow the safety label supplied with your particular candle, because container, wax and wick instructions can vary.

Before you light a candle

Choose a stable, level and heat-resistant surface. Keep the candle well away from curtains, bedding, paper, decorations, shelves and anything else that may catch fire or be damaged by heat. Leave clear space above and around the flame, and avoid draughts from open windows, fans or busy walkways.

Check the vessel for cracks, chips or other damage before use. If a container is damaged, do not light it. Remove packaging, matches, wick trimmings and other debris from the wax. Place candles where children and pets cannot reach or knock them.

Trim and check the wick

Follow the wick length stated on the product label. If no specific measurement is given, keep the wick neat and remove any loose carbon build-up before lighting. A wick that is too long can produce a larger, less steady flame or extra soot. Only trim the wick when the candle is completely cool.

While the candle is burning

  • Stay in the room and keep the candle in sight.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, even for a short time.
  • Keep it away from children, pets and flammable materials.
  • Do not move the candle while the wax is liquid or the container is hot.
  • Keep several burning candles spaced apart.
  • Stop using the candle if the flame becomes unusually high, flickers repeatedly or produces excessive smoke.

Observe the maximum burn time shown on the product label. Long burns can overheat a container. The glass or holder may remain hot after the flame is extinguished, so allow it to cool naturally before touching or moving it.

Extinguishing a candle

Use a suitable candle snuffer if available, or extinguish the flame carefully as directed on the label. Never use water: it can cause hot wax to splash and may damage a glass container. Check that the wick is no longer glowing before leaving the room.

Do not relight a candle until the wax and container are fully cool. Never relight it when only a very small amount of wax remains; follow the stop-use guidance printed on the candle.

Storage and disposal

Store candles upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep lids or covers clean before replacing them. When the candle has reached its stated stop-use point, allow everything to cool and dispose of the remaining wax and container according to the product information and local recycling rules.

Quick safety check

  • Is the surface stable and heat resistant?
  • Is the area clear of draughts and flammable items?
  • Are children and pets safely away?
  • Is the wick prepared as the label recommends?
  • Can you remain nearby for the entire burn?

If every answer is yes, you are ready to enjoy your candle with care. Browse our candles and holders and always follow the instructions supplied with the product you choose.
